female:pressure is an international database for female djs, producers and visual artists, related to the electronic music world, that can be searched by various criteria. It is first and foremost a tool to ensure the existence of women in this apparently entirly male dominated field and to improve communication. The database / website is considered to be a publicly accessible source of information, designed and founded by Vienna based Electric Indigo in 1998 - a technological answer to the recurring complaints of there hardly being any female producers or djs. The programming and continuous advancement of the female:pressure database has been carried out by Viennese open source expert Andrea Mayr. Meanwhile female:pressure can be proud of approximately 1030 members from 52 countries, most of them can be contacted by e-mail and are hyperlinked to their own webpages and to the record labels they release on where applicable. Additional information comprises location, profession and musical style.

"Why are there so few female activists in the electronic music scene?" - each one of the listed artists has heard this question a hundred times. However, experience demonstrates that women are not less active. Their activities are just less recognized and also easily forgotten. This project is continually growing, one e-mail to infoATfemalepressure.net with detailed info about another not as yet listed artist or a colleague’s recommendation is sufficient to become a member.

female:pressure emphasizes the practicality and the necessity of networking and communicating especially in this area and serves as a representational platform to the world, an established standard to be consulted and used as a reference. The database can be searched by regions, countries, styles, professions and names. This makes it easy for people to obtain information about well known artists as well as up-and-coming women who work in the fields of electronic music around the globe. All djs, producers, singers, mcs, videoartists, graphicdesigners, photographers and other visual artists can log into the site and individually update their own profiles, so the information available remains relevant and can be used effectively.

In addition to the website the artists can also subscribe to a mailinglist. In contrast to the website, the mailing list is an exclusive circle, an option for contacts, jobs, planning of new projects, help, information and the sharing of experiences. In 2005 Andrea Mayr and Electric Indigo founded the music production platform open:sounds - a possibility for female:pressure members to share their music and actually work together under CreativeCommons licences. First results of open:sounds were published on the CD "open:sounds vienna" in 2006, in March 2008 we released the female:pressure dvd1 featuring Vienna video artists who created videos for international open:sounds tracks.

female:pressure ist eine internationale online Datenbank für weibliche DJs, Produzentinnen und bildende Künstlerinnen vor allem aus dem Bereich der elektronischen Musik. Sie kann nach verschiedenen, auch verknüpften Kriterien durchsucht werden und ist in erster Linie ein Werkzeug, um die Existenz der Künstlerinnen in dieser scheinbar männerdominierten Szene zu verdeutlichen. 2008 feiert female:pressure 10-jähriges Jubiläum.

female:pressure dient als öffentlich zugängliche Informationsquelle - 1998 von der Wienerin Electric Indigo als technisch systematisierte Antwort auf die gängigen Kommentare, dass es so wenig Frauen in der Szene gäbe, entworfen und begründet. Programmiert und laufend weiterentwickelt wird die Datenbank von der open source Expertin Andrea Mayr. Mittlerweile umfasst sie ca. 1030 Künstlerinnen aus 52 Ländern, von denen die meisten über die Website per E-Mail erreichbar, zu ihrer Homepage und gegebenfalls zu den Plattenlabels, auf denen sie veröffentlichen, verlinkt sind. Zusätzliche Angaben beziehen sich auf den Aufenthaltsort, die Art der Tätigkeit und den Stil.

Die Erfahrung zeigt, dass - durchaus generell - Frauen nicht untätiger sind, sondern ihre Aktivitäten nicht wahrgenommen oder einfach auch mal vergessen werden. Tatsächlich wächst dieses Projekt kontinuierlich, es genügt eine E-Mail an infoATfemalepressure.net mit nachvollziehbaren Informationen über eine noch nicht vertretene Künstlerin bzw. die Empfehlung einer Kollegin, um in der Datenbank gelistet zu werden.

female:pressure betont die Nützlichkeit und Notwendigkeit der Vernetzung und Kommunikation in der Szene und dient als Plattform zur Repräsentation nach "außen". Hier wird ein Standard etabliert, der als Verweis und Nachschlagwerk dient und den alle Interessierten jederzeit nutzen können. Die Datenbank ist nach Regionen, Ländern, Stilen, Berufen und Namen durchsuchbar. So ist es möglich, sich über bestimmte Künstlerinnen zu informieren oder einfach mal zu schauen, wer wo was macht.

Alle auf female:pressure gelisteten DJs, Produzentinnen, Sängerinnen, MCs, Videokünstlerinnen, Grafikerinnen, Fotografinnen und sonstigen Visual Artists können sich einloggen und ihren individuellen Datensatz über ein Webinterface aktualisieren, um die Wahrscheinlichkeit zu erhöhen, mit den Informationen immer auf dem neuesten Stand zu sein.

Parallel zum Webprojekt existiert einerseits eine Mailingliste, auf der ein Großteil der Aktivistinnen subskribiert ist, wo - abseits von der allgemein zugänglichen Datenbank - Jobs angeboten, neue Projekte ausgeheckt, Kontakte gemacht und verstärkt, Hilfestellungen geleistet, Erfahrungen diskutiert und Informationen ausgetauscht werden. Andererseits stellt die 2005 eingeführte, nur für Members nutzbare Musikproduktionsplattform open:sounds eine konkrete Möglichkeit dar, musikalisch und unter bestimmten CreativeCommons Lizenzen zusammenzuarbeiten. 2006 wurde das erste Resultat dieser Kooperationen veröffentlicht: die CD "open:sounds vienna", im März 2008 die female:pressure dvd1, bei der Wiener Visualistinnen zu internationalen open:sounds Tracks Videos beisteuerten.
